Bali sits roughly 14 hours from Amsterdam by air — but the route you take to get there shapes both the price and the experience considerably. There is no direct flight. Every journey connects somewhere, and the choice of hub matters: it affects fare, total travel time, layover experience, and arrival airport. Getting this right is the main lever for keeping the cost reasonable.
The main connecting routes
KLM connects via Singapore on a codeshare with Singapore Airlines — frequently the most comfortable combination and often competitive on price. Emirates via Dubai offers reliable connections with Dubai to Bali a relatively direct run. Qatar Airways via Doha and Etihad via Abu Dhabi are both solid, frequently discounted options. Turkish Airlines via Istanbul is often the cheapest option by a meaningful margin — sometimes €150–200 below other carriers — though total travel time stretches to 14–17 hours. China Eastern and other Chinese carriers can price below €500 return, but connections via Chinese airports add travel time and require a transit visa check.
When to go and what it costs
Bali’s dry season is April to October. The peak — July and August — sees return fares exceed €800, sometimes €1,000. Shoulder months April, May, and September offer the best value: fares €580–720, reliably dry weather, manageable crowds. October is also good before the wet season. The wet season (November–March) brings afternoon rain most days, but fares can fall to €520–600 return and hotels follow suit. January and February are the cheapest months on this route.
The layover factor
Singapore’s Changi Airport has hotels airside, a rooftop pool, and free city tours for connections over five hours — arguably the world’s best layover airport. Dubai’s DXB is straightforward for a four-hour connection. If fares are close, routing via Singapore adds meaningful value even before you reach Bali. Practical notes
Dutch nationals need a Visa on Arrival for Indonesia ($35 USD at Ngurah Rai Airport), or apply in advance via the Indonesian e-VOA system at molina.imigrasi.go.id for the same cost. Ngurah Rai Airport serves the south of Bali — Seminyak and Canggu are 20–40 minutes away; Ubud is 1.5 hours. Confirm accommodation pickup arrangements before you land.
