Amsterdam to New York Cheap Flights: How to Find Deals Under €400

Find cheap Amsterdam to New York flights from €399 return. Which airlines compete hardest, when to book, and how to avoid the most expensive weeks.

Seven and a half hours of flying separates Amsterdam from New York, but the price gap between a well-timed booking and a last-minute one can be wider than the Atlantic itself. Return fares below €400 exist on this route — but finding them requires knowing which weeks airlines discount and which they protect.

The airlines that compete hardest

KLM has operated Amsterdam–New York for decades, flying to both JFK and Newark (EWR). Delta, KLM’s SkyTeam partner, codeshares on many flights. Norse Atlantic Airways has repeatedly undercut legacy carrier prices on the AMS–JFK route with promotional fares. Air France via Paris and British Airways via London can also undercut the direct route during quiet periods, adding two to four hours of travel time.

When cheap fares appear

January is the single cheapest month — post-Christmas demand collapses, airlines compete aggressively. Fares below €380 return are achievable with two to three months’ lead time. February is similar. March and November are other reliable windows for sub-€450 fares. Summer (June–August) is the most expensive period. Thanksgiving week in late November is a spike; surrounding weeks are fine. The weeks immediately before and after Christmas are among the most expensive of the year.

JFK versus Newark

KLM flies to both. JFK is reached by AirTrain and subway in 45–60 minutes ($8.50). Newark connects by NJ Transit to Penn Station in 30 minutes ($17). Newark fares are often slightly cheaper and the airport less congested. The price difference is usually more significant than the transit time difference.

Finding the cheapest fare

Fares for this route change frequently. Tuesday mornings (US time) tend to see the freshest pricing. The flexible calendar view on Trip.com for Amsterdam to New York shows fare variation across a whole month — shifting your trip three or four days can sometimes save €100 or more.

Total trip costs

Hotels in Manhattan average €200–350 per night. Brooklyn and Queens are cheaper at €120–180. Dutch nationals need an ESTA before entering the US ($21, apply at esta.cbp.dhs.gov, valid two years). A week in New York in January or February costs roughly half what the same trip costs in July — cheaper flights and cheaper hotels simultaneously.
