Rome has three airports, two of which matter for travellers from Amsterdam, and the difference between them shapes both the price you pay and how long it takes to reach the city. Getting clear on this upfront is the single most useful thing before booking — because the cheapest fare does not always mean the cheapest trip.
Fiumicino or Ciampino: what you need to know
Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport (FCO) is Rome’s main hub, 30km southwest of the city. The Leonardo Express train connects it to Roma Termini in 32 minutes for €14. Ciampino Airport (CIA) is smaller, 15km southeast of the city, used primarily by Ryanair. Bus connections to Termini take about 40 minutes and cost €6–8. When comparing fares, check which airport each flight uses — a €10 saving on the base fare can evaporate in transport costs.
Airlines on the Amsterdam–Rome route
Ryanair operates the most flights, to Ciampino, with some of the lowest base fares — returns frequently advertised below €70. EasyJet flies to Fiumicino and is a solid middle ground: slightly higher fares but a more straightforward experience. ITA Airways connects Schiphol to Fiumicino with full service included. KLM runs the route on codeshare but rarely offers the lowest fares.
When fares are cheapest
January and February: returns regularly €80–120. Rome in winter has shorter Vatican Museum queues than any other time of year. Holy Week (Easter) is one of the most expensive and crowded times — avoid unless it is specifically what you want. April and May are excellent once Easter passes: warm, fares €100–150 return. October is the best balance: fares €90–140, heat eases to 18–22°C, tourist density drops. November is even cheaper — many museums are half-price on the first Sunday of the month.
Booking the cheapest fare
Six to eight weeks before departure is consistently the best lead time. The calendar view on Trip.com for Amsterdam to Rome shows both FCO and CIA options side by side, lets you filter by stops, and compares total prices including carry-on fees. Book Colosseum tickets at coopculture.it and Vatican Museums at museivaticani.va before you travel — both sell out weeks ahead in summer.
